for three percussion players.
Bauhaus is a work for three percussionists who almost exclusively use untempered wooden instruments: Wood Drums, Guiros, Wood Chimes, Wood Blocks, and a large variety of wooden sticks. Additionally, three resonant metal instruments, un- or poorly tempered, are used.
The piece is written in five movements and explores the continuity of sound in wooden instruments, with struck, rubbed, grooved, and resonant sounds… to create a rich and highly narrative polyphony. At times, the aim is to give the impression that more than three musicians are playing, both through the carefully polyrhythmic writing and the use of special elements such as vibrators attached to resonant instruments.
The title comes from the school of thought primarily in architecture but also in design, photography, painting, etc. Founded approximately a hundred years ago, it is a kind of tribute to the rational, sensitive, strict and sensual thinking of that school. Additionally, it is a reference to the city of Tel Aviv, which became a refuge for many Bauhaus artists, whose influence can be seen in its urban planning and architecture. Unfortunately, it seems that its current politicians have forgotten that open, welcoming, internationalist, and pacifist spirit.
Bauhaus is a piece commissioned by and written in collaboration with Synergein Project. It received the help of the Institut Valencià de Cultura.
