Marc Garcia-Vitoria (Valencia, 1985) has been commissioned and performed by Intercontemporain, Contrechamps, Linea, Recherche and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, as well as by Radio France and Ircam. Trained in Barcelona, Geneva and at Ircam, he is currently a doctoral researcher at SACRe (CNSMDP / ENS–PSL) and the Haute école de musique de Genève, where he develops the notion of Expansive Orchestration.

Marc Garcia-Vitoria’s music, often praised by performers for the quality of its craftsmanship, has been commissioned and premiered by ensembles and orchestras such as Intercontemporain, Contrechamps, Linea, Recherche and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, with commissions from Radio France, the French Ministry of Culture, the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung and Ircam.

Born in Valencia in 1985, he studied composition at the ESMUC in Barcelona and at the Haute école de musique de Genève, with Luis Naón, Ramón Lazkano, Michael Jarrell and Eric Daubresse, and followed Cursus 1 and 2 at Ircam. He received the University of Aberdeen Music Prize (2011) and the Young Composers Prize of the SGAE–CNDM Foundation (2013), and was composer in residence for the Jove Orquestra de la Generalitat Valenciana (2018–2021).

After teaching composition and orchestration at the Conservatorios Superiores de Música of Alicante and Valencia (2016–2024), he is currently a doctoral researcher in the SACRe programme (CNSMDP / ENS–PSL), in co-tutelle with the Haute école de musique de Genève, where his research develops the notion of Expansive Orchestration.

His musical universe — between a Mediterranean transparency and taste for simple things, a French attention to sound and timbre, and a Swiss sense of precision — is broad, and ranges from collaborations with choreographers to a concerto grosso with live electronics.

In 2008 he was a finalist for the Reine Marie José Composition Prize, in 2011 he received the University of Aberdeen Music Prize, and in 2013 the Young Composers Prize of the SGAE–CNDM Foundation. He has received commissions from the Institut Valencià de la Música, Radio France, the French Ministry of Culture, the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung, Ircam and the Archipel Festival.

Born in Valencia in 1985, he studied composition at the ESMUC in Barcelona with Luis Naón, Ramón Lazkano and Gabriel Brnčić, and obtained a Master’s degree at the Haute école de musique de Genève with Michael Jarrell, Luis Naón and Eric Daubresse, specialising in electroacoustic and instrumental composition. He developed the technical part of his Master’s project at Ircam in Paris, following Cursus 1 and 2 under Yan Maresz, with the support of the “la Caixa” Foundation.

He has been composer in residence for La porta clàssica (Joves Intèrprets Catalans IV, 2007–2008), the Transforme/Écrire programme of the Fondation Royaumont (2011–2012) and the Jove Orquestra de la Generalitat Valenciana (2018–2021), for which he wrote three orchestral works, including a viola concerto for Joaquín Riquelme.

He taught at the Haute école de musique de Genève between 2011 and 2016, first as a composition assistant and then as a teacher of counterpoint, and taught composition and orchestration at the Conservatorios Superiores de Música of Alicante and Valencia between 2016 and 2024, where he also headed the department of composition, voice, conducting and sonology (2020–2024).

He is currently a doctoral researcher in the SACRe programme (CNSMDP / ENS–PSL), in co-tutelle with the Haute école de musique de Genève, where he is also an artistic and scientific collaborator. His research develops the notion of Expansive Orchestration.
